Gillian Green and Wendy Metcalfe opened the tea rooms at Shepherds Hall on 16th March 2012. This was after a winter of updating and changing the upstairs area which was to become our tea room. Gill had previously run a pub near Whitby so had plenty of catering and business experience. Wendy had experience of having her own business when she sold sports wear on the markets of Ripon, Thirsk and Knaresborough. The summer of 2012 saw a lot of rain, the country was in recession and people said "Is this a good time to open a tea rooms in a small village on the North Yorkshire Moors?" Obviously the business needed to be built up as the building had been shut for a year or more. We have seen an increasing number of customers year by year with locals and tourists returning. We do nearly all our own baking on the mornings before we open. You can't beat good old BeRo cook books!!
